ABOUT RABIES

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. However, it is 100% preventable with immediate and proper treatment after an animal bite or scratch.

First Aid After Bite or Scratch
  • Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Apply an antiseptic such as Povidone-Iodine or 70% alcohol if available.
  • Do NOT apply toothpaste, coffee, oil, herbs, or other home remedies.
  • Seek medical attention at the nearest ABTC as soon as possible.
Prevent Rabies
  • Vaccinate your dogs and cats every year.
  • Avoid touching stray or unknown animals.
  • Report animal bites immediately.
Observe the Animal

If the biting dog or cat is healthy, observe it for 14 days. Immediately report if the animal dies, becomes sick, shows unusual behavior, or cannot be found.

Warning Signs of Rabies
